Off to Wordpress...

Thus ends a famous tamil grammar book by name "Nannool" written by Bavanandhi Munivar. It translates approximately as: "It is not a mistake that the old order vanishes and new order enters the world; Just an order of time".

It is quite a cliched argument, albeit, true even now. I am moving to Wordpress from now. Expect my first post there soon...

A day before New Year...

Every new year, I write something like the below.

And then God Said, "Let there be peace!"
And  Ho! It was not to be!
It is for us to say, "Let there be peace".

Dion presents his compilation of Web 2.0 software as a new year gift. Cool Collection. The list extends even to the comments section. Nice effort! Below, the effect of this article on my Firefox Bookmarks ToolBar. Let us see how much of that stays...

Wishing everyone a peaceful and prosperous New Year, 2006! Let us work constantly towards integrating our strengths and differentiating our weaknesses!

IISc attack...

From Rediff

News reached me through my friend. NDTV has confirmed the report. That is really shocking. The country's highest science research institute... On everyone's minds now: Was it a terrorist attack? NDTV reports that an investigation is on to ascertain the same.

India, the hottest investment destination??

After the recent surge in ICT FDI in India which one noticed in the 3rd and 4th quarters of 2004, I had started compiling a list. Rediff has reduced my load.

Personally, it is hype that makes a hit.(take the over-rated Indian batting, for example) There is a feel good factor about India from what we see and hear. I am skeptic about India's potential though. My concern is more with the infrastructure front than with the manpower front as I believe that our current employable-manpower defiencies can be treated comfortably.

Frankly, my own darling city, Chennai doesn't deserve the attention from the tech biggies but for the manpower and the current government's willingness. The recent floods showed why. This is not about the government's inability to handle floods. It is about Chennai's vulnerability as a structure. Ofcourse, if 100 highly paid managers feel fine about it, then my opinion counts to nothing. Only time shall say!

Ofcourse, there is another thing that such companies should consider. India is a constraining society. Far too many rules for companies used to a liberal environment. They would have to adapt to "Indian Culture". Else, the objective conflict would lead to unsavory situations. Again, only time shall have the last word! Can the "hip-hop-we-don't-stop-here-we-go" fed modern generation coexist with the moral police of our country?

Coming back to the hype, yes we are hyped. So what? Let us "Make Hay While the Sun Shines" seems a fair thing to say. As to me, it is of great academic interest as any anomaly is to the Scientist! Certainty doesn't contribute to information!

P.S: As a political note, I would also like to bring to your eyes, the petty politics that the two major parties in TN are playing. That could turn anyone off!

Coding Theory & HP

  • Mood kaiyum kaalum thuru thurunu irukku... edhaavadhu pannanume
  • Music: Merkey, Pani Thuli... from Kanda Naal Mudhal.
It makes one laugh (albeit, i must admit, from a theoretical perspective) to see theories/advancements in mathematics take so long for the industry to latch on to get better results.

Ofcourse, one understands that investments, practical considerations play a big role in stopping theoretical advances into practice directly.

Here is one from the HP Quantum Sciences Research Lab.

Today, I was listening to Maarghazi Maha Utsavam on Jaya TV. Sanjay Subramaniam was the performer. Frankly, if Carnatic music were the proverbial 'Karpooram' , I will play donkey! Nevertheless, I enjoyed the  nature of the music after first laughing at Sanjay's 'baavams'. It was soothing and there was depth in it. This was no "instant gratification" music that we are so fond of!

The more interesting part to the lay man was the Kelvi Neram and Sanjay did well with some nice retorts.  When asked something to the tune of "mettuku paatu or paatukku mettu" he said, "why ask me? i am not a composer. you must ask people like Thiagarajar, Shaama Sastry etc".

The next question was "Whether Carnatic Music would reach the layman?". He made a good point when he said (gist) ,"Isai enbathu oru nun-kalai. Nun endraale nutpam dhaane. Nutpam niraindha edhayume expertsaala mattum dhaan rasikka mudiyum".

My friend VK has started a tamil blog. Let us see what comes out of it!

Google Trends

Click here for my search trends. The daily activity thing was weird for me. Wednesdays & Thursdays more activity? I don't have an explanation for that. May be by that time I am more settled into the week or may be I am distracted to do something else only on those days... May be.
I am overusing G's webclips now. But was shocked when G put a limit(40) on the no. of custom feeds. C'mon man, you must give a 1000 atleast!

Another Tsunami ??

That seems up next in Nature's Thiruvilayaadal.

Atleast Professor John McCloskey feels "comfortable" talking about a significant increase in the risk of another quake. Today's X-Factor ran this story. (How appropriate a title for this one!)

After a call with Prof. McCloskey, NDTV spoke to Mr. Kapil Sibal. Was surprised to learn that our response times have improved from an hour (March'05) to 20-25 minutes now. Seems, after the Sep. 2007 installation of a "world-class" tsunami warning system, this time will reduce to less than 10 minutes.

Prof. McCloskey is considered a world authority on Environmental Sciences and his team is supposed to have predicted the previous big earthquakes in Sumatra. To be noted is the fact that, one can only say that an earthquake seems highly likely in a place and not when! (Hmmm... The Heisenberg Uncertainty principle? That can wait for now... will post later)

So, keep your fingers crossed and escape the next tsunami!

Tim Berners Lee blogs!

...Yet another example of the short nature of public memory. I donno how many of you remember that earthquake that happened in Pak, PoK & Jammu recently. And that it is freezing sub zero winter in those places now and there are some people who don't even have some sort of shelter there... We need the (responsible and ethical) media!

G's Webclips has bowled me over. How efficient news reading & mail checking have become! And I feel, Google Reader itself would be obviated because of this. And then, Google has already released the 2005 Zeitgeist.

Sun TV: Whither Media Ethics?

The Sun TV brand of hype journalism has achieved limitless bounds. Especially, this thing called Tamil Murasu and the way they use it are deplorable. Leave alone "Nachunu irukku". Idhu padu kevalama irukku!

So much that it has got me out of this short self imposed penance away from blogging. I respect Sun TV for the professional way their network has grown. (more so than Jaya TV) But both of them practice cheap journalism! There needs to be strong censorship against such hype journalism. It all started with "Kolai panraangappa". Now it has gone far too deep rooted.

Sir Winston Churchill rightly remarked, "There is no such thing as public opinion. There is only published opinion".

And now, game play outsourcing. Huh! You are pissed off doing a thing. Got Money? Then, outsource! If only I had money... And all you, Asian students doing their graduate studies, you have one more alternative that pays as you play. (other than working in fuelling stations, webpage development, canteens etc)

Orkutting...

  • Now Reading: http://www.nationalacademies.org/headlines/20051116.html

When my friend Malar asked a few days back, why I wasn't part of Orkut? (given my over enthu) I replied back just to kalaasify her... it is not orkut but orPUT (meaning it was a place for flirts)

The real reason was that I am already addicted to a lot of stuff. Orkut will be another major distraction. Ofcourse there need not be any committment to use it. But that's me. Vetti thanam is something that's urufied in me.

Huh! Well, here I am. Reason I joined was an invite from Madhan. (It is as irresistible as that)

P.S: I find that the server is very bad, is that so?
